Jeep announced Friday that it will create a network of electric-vehicle charging stations at US off-roading spots. Through a partnership with Electrify America, the brand will spend the next year installing Level 2 chargers at trailheads across the country.

The first Jeep-branded chargers will go up this spring at three of the most popular destinations for Jeep owners: Moab, Utah; Big Bear, California; and the Rubicon Trail in Pollock Pines, California, the company said. Over the next year, stations will open for business at additional locations near "Badge of Honor" trails, which are part of an app-based rewards program for Jeep owners. There are 62 such trails across the US.

Jeep doesn't sell any pure EVs, but it did recently launch the Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid version of its long-running, rugged SUV. The Electrify America chargers will be able to fully charge a 4xe's battery pack in roughly two hours. The 17 kWh pack offers owners 49 MPGe and 21 miles of electric range, according to Jeep.

Owners of the 4xe will be able to charge up for free through a mobile app. Some stations will be powered by solar arrays.

Jeep plans to eventually offer an electrified version of each model in its lineup, and it has signaled willingness to experiment with all-electric models. Earlier in March, the brand unveiled a battery-powered Wrangler concept called the Magneto

Jeep won't be the only brand offering charging to its outdoorsy customers. EV startup Rivian announced plans in March to build an "Adventure Network" of at least 3,500 DC fast-chargers exclusively for owners of its pickups and SUVs.
